Self-publishing a nonfiction book on a budget
You can publish a book for almost nothing; what costs money is making it good. With a small budget, the question is order: what to pay a professional for first, and what you can safely do yourself. Below are three budgets for a 50,000-word nonfiction book, $500, $2,000 and $5,000, each priced line by line from the sourced rates in this site's calculator.
The order to spend in
Every self-published book needs the same things: an edited manuscript, a cover, an interior, an ISBN or platform ID, and a place to sell it. On Amazon KDP the last three can cost nothing (what KDP gives you free). That leaves two things money buys that you cannot replace yourself:
- Editing. Nobody catches their own errors, and errors cost a nonfiction book its reader's trust.
- The cover. It is the one part of the book every potential reader sees.
After those come the smaller items: a proofread of the laid-out pages, copyright registration at $45, your own ISBN if you will sell beyond Amazon, and paid layout if the book has tables, images or complex design. The budgets below follow that order.
All three assume 50,000 words, which this site's calculator sets at 140 pages (360 words a page) with a KDP printing cost of $2.68 a copy. Rates are the calculator's: editing from the Editorial Freelancers Association's 2026 rate chart (median ranges, not quotes), covers from the EFA and Reedsy, ISBNs from Bowker, copyright from the US Copyright Office, all checked October 21, 2026.
About $500
| Line | Choice | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Cover design | Low end: EFA per-project median | $350 |
| Copyright registration | Single Application, filed yourself | $45 |
| Library of Congress number | Free; one copy owed after publication | $2.68 |
| Author copies | 20 at print cost, before shipping | $53.60 |
| ISBN, layout, ebook file | KDP's free ISBN; Kindle Create or KDP templates | $0 |
| Total | $451.28 |
The hard truth about this budget: it does not buy editing for a full-length book. At EFA median rates, even a proofread of 50,000 words costs $1,000 to $1,500, and a copy edit $1,500 to $2,000. So at $500, the money goes to the cover, and the editing has to come from you and your readers. Put the manuscript in front of several people who match your intended reader and ask specific questions, read every chapter aloud, and leave time between drafts.
Two honest alternatives. A shorter book changes the math: a 20,000-word guide costs $400 to $600 to proofread at 2 to 3 cents a word. Or hold the cover money, publish later, and save toward the $2,000 budget. A book with errors stays on your Amazon page with the reviews it earns.

About $2,000
| Line | Choice | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Copy edit | Low end: 3.0 cents a word | $1,500 |
| Cover design | Low end | $350 |
| Copyright registration | Single Application | $45 |
| Library of Congress number | One copy | $2.68 |
| Author copies | 25 | $67 |
| ISBN, layout, ebook file | Free tools | $0 |
| Total | $1,964.68 |
This is the smallest budget we would call careful. Three-quarters of it goes to a copy edit, which fixes grammar, consistency and clarity sentence by sentence. Ask the editor for a sample edit of a few pages first, and ask whether they also check the final layout, and at what price.
What it still leaves out: a developmental edit, which looks at structure (EFA nonfiction median 4.0 to 5.0 cents a word, $2,000 to $2,500 here), and a separate proofread. If early readers tell you the book's structure works, that is a reasonable risk. If they say they got lost in the middle, the developmental edit is the better use of the $1,500. The editing costs guide explains what each type does.

About $5,000
| Line | Choice | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Copy edit | Mid-range: 3.5 cents a word | $1,750 |
| Proofread | Low end: 2.0 cents a word | $1,000 |
| Cover design | Reedsy median | $930 |
| Print interior layout | Low end: $5.00 a page x 140 | $700 |
| ISBNs | 10 from Bowker | $295 |
| Copyright registration | Single Application | $45 |
| Library of Congress number | One copy | $2.68 |
| Author copies | 50 | $134 |
| Ebook file | Exported from the print layout or Kindle Create | $0 |
| Total | $4,856.68 |
At this level the book gets two sets of professional eyes on the text and a cover in the middle of the market. Your own ISBNs, ten for $295, list you or your imprint as publisher and let you print the same edition through IngramSpark or anyone else; KDP's free ISBN "can only be used on KDP" (KDP). Ten covers a paperback, hardcover and ebook with room for later editions.
The swap to consider: if your structure is the open question, drop the paid layout and proofread ($1,700) and add a developmental edit at the low end ($2,000). A text-only book lays out well with free tools, and a well-structured book with a missed typo serves readers better than a polished one that loses them halfway through. The formatting guide covers when paid layout is worth it.

For a sense of where these sit, Reedsy's marketplace puts the total cost to self-publish at $2,940 to $5,660, from more than 230,000 freelancer quotes, with editing figured on an 80,000-word book (Reedsy). Our line-by-line costs page has every rate with its source.
What you can do yourself
- Interior layout, for a text-only book. Reedsy notes that a book that is "primarily words" can be typeset free with its Reedsy Studio app. Pay a designer if you have tables, charts, images or callouts on most pages.
- The ebook file. Kindle Create converts a Word file into a Kindle ebook and can also prepare the print interior for KDP. If you want software or a freelancer instead, ebook conversion costs are priced option by option.
- The ISBN, if you only sell on Amazon. KDP's free ISBN costs nothing; the trade-off is the "Independently published" imprint and no use outside KDP. See the ISBN guide.
- Copyright and Library of Congress filings. Registration is a $45 online form for one author and one work; the Library of Congress number is free. The copyright guide walks through both.
- The book description, categories and upload. These cost time, not money.
Free tools and their limits
| Tool | What it does | Limits (from the maker's own pages) |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle Create | Turns a Word file into a Kindle ebook and a KDP print interior; builds a table of contents | No cover formatting; not for publishing outside Kindle; editing of tables, lists and footnotes is listed as unsupported |
| KDP manuscript templates | Word templates with page size and margins set for each trim size | You do the formatting; sample text must be removed before upload |
| KDP Cover Creator | Template covers for ebook, paperback and hardcover; adds the ISBN to the barcode area | Template layouts; covers made with its stock images cannot be downloaded for use outside KDP |
| Reedsy Studio | Typesets a book for print and ebook | Reedsy says it suits books that are primarily words; complex books need a formatter |
| KDP virtual voice audiobooks | Free computer-voiced audiobook from your Kindle ebook | Invite-only beta for eligible ebooks, US only, 40% royalty |
Checked October 21, 2026. KDP's Cover Studio, a newer design tool, is in a closed beta and not open to new sign-ups.
One more free saving: KDP now offers a font, Amazon Endure, that it says is designed to reduce page count and printing costs. Every 100 pages you save is $1.20 off each copy you print (KDP printing cost).
What not to skip
- Some form of professional edit, once your budget reaches about $1,500. Below that, use readers and time.
- A cover you did not make from a default template, if anyone will see the book on a store page.
- A printed proof. One copy costs the print price, $2.68 here, plus shipping, and shows problems a screen hides.
- Copyright registration. At $45 it is the cheapest line on the list and the one that matters if someone copies your work.
And know your earn-back before you spend. At $7.51 a paperback on Amazon, the $2,000 budget needs 262 sales to pay for itself, or 138 copies sold by hand; the per-book earnings guide has every format.
If you outgrow these budgets, Scribe Media, which makes this site, offers full-service publishing from $29,000 and a $2,000 manuscript evaluation (scribemedia.com/pricing). For most first-time authors on a budget, a good copy editor and cover designer are the right first spend.
Common questions
How much does it cost to self-publish a book?
Publishing itself can cost nothing on Amazon KDP. Making the book costs what you pay for: for a 50,000-word nonfiction book, about $450 for a cover and the basics, about $1,965 with a professional copy edit, and about $4,860 with a copy edit, proofread, mid-range cover and paid layout, using this site's sourced rates.
What is the average price to self-publish a book?
Reedsy, a freelance marketplace, puts the total at $2,940 to $5,660 based on more than 230,000 quotes from its professionals. Its editing figures assume an 80,000-word book, so a shorter nonfiction book usually costs less to edit.
How much does it cost to publish a book yourself?
If you do the layout, ebook file, ISBN and uploading yourself, your costs are mainly editing and the cover. A copy edit of 50,000 words runs $1,500 to $2,000 at EFA median rates, and a designed cover $350 to $1,200.
What should I pay for first when self-publishing?
Editing, then the cover. A copy edit catches the errors you cannot see in your own writing, and the cover decides whether anyone opens the book. Layout, ISBNs and ebook formatting can often be done free for a text-only book.
What can I do myself when self-publishing?
For a text-heavy book: the interior layout and ebook file (with Kindle Create, KDP's Word templates or Reedsy Studio), the ISBN if you only sell through KDP, the copyright filing, the Library of Congress number application and the upload. Editing your own book is the one job that does not work.
