Interior formatting and typesetting cost

A professionally laid-out print interior costs about $5.00 to $7.50 a finished page in the EFA's 2026 survey, so $700 to $1,050 for a 140-page book. An ebook file adds $1.88 to $4.38 a page. For a book that is mostly text, a free tool can do the job, and the money is better spent on editing.

What layout costs

Interior layout, also called typesetting or interior design, turns an edited manuscript into book pages: fonts, margins, chapter openings, running heads, page numbers, and the front and back matter. The ebook version is a separate file that reflows to fit each screen.

Checked October 20, 2026. The EFA's per-page layout rate is per finished page; its editing rates use a 250-word manuscript page.

The per-page and per-project figures land in the same place for a typical nonfiction book: somewhere between $500 and $1,300 for a professional print interior. Hourly billing gives a wider spread. At the EFA's pace of 5 to 11 pages an hour, 140 pages takes 13 to 28 hours, or roughly $640 to $1,540.

How many pages your book will be

Layout and printing are both priced by the page, so you need a page estimate before you can budget either. The trim size and type size decide how many words fit. Gatekeeper Press publishes these figures for 11.5 point body text with standard margins:

Trim sizeWords a page50,000 words70,000 words

The calculator uses 360 words a page, the low end for 6 x 9, which gives a slightly higher page count and so a slightly safer budget. If you have a sample layout or a proof, type the real page count in instead.

How page count changes your print cost

Layout decisions carry on costing money after the designer is paid, because print-on-demand charges by the page. Amazon KDP's paperback formula for a black-ink, regular-trim book over 108 pages is $1.00 plus $0.012 a page.

  • 130 pages: $1.00 + $1.56 = $2.56 a copy
  • 170 pages: $1.00 + $2.04 = $3.04 a copy
  • 210 pages: $1.00 + $2.52 = $3.52 a copy

The same 50,000 words at 5 x 8 instead of 6 x 9 costs about 80 cents more per copy to print. Over 1,000 copies that is roughly $800, which can be more than the layout fee. A larger trim with generous margins is usually the cheaper book to print, not the more expensive one, as long as it stays within KDP's regular trim sizes (large trims cost $0.017 a page instead of $0.012).

When free tools are enough

Reedsy's guide says plainly that most text-only books, including nonfiction, can be laid out to professional standard with its free Studio app, and that specialist formatting is what justifies a professional. Here is a fair way to decide.

Free tool is usually finePay a designer
Running text with headingsTables, charts, diagrams or photographs
Simple pull quotes or listsWorksheets, exercises or fill-in pages
One trim size, one ebook fileAn index tied to page numbers
A book for your own clientsA book competing on a bookstore shelf, where the inside is judged against professionally set books

If you go the free route, order a printed proof before you publish. Reedsy puts proof copies at $10 to $100 depending on page count, quantity and shipping. A proof shows problems a screen hides: tight gutters, widows, a heading stranded at the foot of a page.

Where layout sits in the order of work

  1. Developmental and copy edits are finished and accepted.
  2. Layout sets the pages and produces a first proof.
  3. The proofreader checks the proof, not the manuscript.
  4. The designer makes corrections, then exports print and ebook files.
  5. The cover designer sets the spine to the final page count.

Changing text after step 2 costs money with most designers, so get the copy edit finished first. If you publish through IngramSpark, file revisions themselves have been free since February 1, 2026 (IngramSpark), but your designer's time to make the change is not.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Laying out an unedited manuscript. Every later change is a paid change, and text that moves can reflow whole chapters.
  • Comparing per-page quotes on different page counts. Agree the trim and type size first, then compare.
  • Forgetting the ebook. Ask whether it is included or priced separately.
  • Picking a small trim to look substantial. More pages means a higher print cost on every copy, for the life of the book.
  • Skipping the printed proof. It is the cheapest insurance in the whole budget.

Common questions

How much does it cost to typeset a book?

The EFA's 2026 chart puts print layout at $5.00 to $7.50 a finished page, so a 140-page book costs $700 to $1,050. Reedsy reports an average of $800, with about half of projects between $475 and $1,275.

How many pages will my book be?

At 11.5 point type, Gatekeeper Press estimates 360 to 390 words a page for a 6 x 9 inch book, 300 to 330 for 5.5 x 8.5 and 240 to 260 for 5 x 8. A 50,000-word book is roughly 130 to 140 pages at 6 x 9, before front and back matter.

Can I format my own book for free?

For a text-only book, yes. Reedsy says books that are primarily words can be laid out to a professional standard with its free Studio app. Books with tables, images, worksheets or a complex design are where a paid designer earns the fee.

Do I need separate formatting for the ebook?

Usually a separate file, yes, because ebooks reflow to fit the screen. The EFA rate for ebook layout is $1.88 to $4.38 a page, and many designers include the ebook when they do the print interior, so ask.
