What it costs to publish a book on Amazon KDP

Publishing on Amazon KDP costs nothing upfront. Amazon prints each paperback when it sells and takes the printing cost out of your royalty; on a 140-page book that is $2.68 a copy. What you actually spend depends on what you pay others to do before you upload: editing, the cover, your own ISBN, and the copies you buy for yourself. Here is each piece with Amazon's own numbers.

What is free on KDP

Amazon describes KDP as "free and simple tools to self-publish" (KDP). In practice, everything you need to get a book live costs nothing:

The free ISBN is the one choice here worth a second thought. If you might later print the same edition through IngramSpark or a local printer, you will need your own ISBN, because KDP's "can only be used on KDP." The ISBN guide covers when the free one is fine.

How printing is taken from royalties

KDP "prints your book on demand and subtracts your printing costs from your royalties," so you "don't have to pay any costs upfront or carry any inventory" (KDP Paperback Printing Cost). Two published formulas do the work.

Printing cost = fixed cost + (page count x per-page cost). For a black-ink paperback in a regular trim sold on Amazon.com, that is a flat $2.30 for 24 to 110 pages, and $1.00 plus $0.012 a page above that. Large trims, color ink and hardcovers cost more; the printing costs guide has every row.

Royalty = (royalty rate x list price) - printing cost. On Amazon.com the rate is 60% at list prices of $9.99 and above and 50% at $9.98 and below. Through Expanded Distribution it is 40% (KDP Paperback Royalty).

Worked example (our numbers, using KDP's formulas). A 50,000-word nonfiction book set at about 360 words a page runs 140 pages. Printing: $1.00 + 140 x $0.012 = $2.68. At a $16.99 list price on Amazon.com: 0.60 x $16.99 = $10.19, minus $2.68 = $7.51 per copy. Sold through Expanded Distribution at the same price: 0.40 x $16.99 - $2.68 = $4.12.

KDP's own example on that page: a 333-page paperback listed at $15 earns 0.60 x $15 - $5.00 = $4.00 on Amazon.com, and $1.00 through Expanded Distribution.

The printing cost also sets a floor. KDP will not let you list a paperback below printing cost divided by the royalty rate that applies at that price. Below $9.99 the rate is 50%, so our 140-page book cannot be listed under $2.68 / 0.50 = $5.36, a price at which it would earn nothing. The ceiling on Amazon.com is $250.

A hardcover works the same way at a higher cost: $5.65 plus $0.012 a page for 110 to 550 black-ink pages, so $7.33 for 140 pages, and the same 50% and 60% royalty bands (KDP Hardcover Printing Cost, Hardcover Royalty). At $24.99 that hardcover earns 0.60 x $24.99 - $7.33 = $7.66.

Kindle ebooks: the delivery cost

A Kindle ebook has no printing cost, but the 70% royalty option carries a delivery cost: $0.15 per megabyte on Amazon.com, with a $0.01 minimum. The formula is 70% x (list price - VAT - delivery cost) (KDP Digital Book Pricing Page). KDP says delivery costs average $0.06 a sale (KDP eBook Royalties).

Since July 7, 2026, the 70% option covers list prices from $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com, up from $9.99 (KDP eBook List Price Requirements). Outside that band you get 35% of the price and no delivery cost. One more rule from the pricing page: on the 70% option, your ebook must be listed at least 20% below the Amazon list price of any print edition. With a $16.99 paperback, that caps the ebook at $13.59, which the $12.99 band ceiling already covers.

Worked example: a $7.99 ebook with a 2 MB file earns 0.70 x ($7.99 - $0.30) = $5.38 a sale. The file size matters little unless you load the book with images; what ebook conversion costs works through a 20 MB example, along with the tools that make the file.

Proof and author copies

This is where KDP does charge you. When you order proof or author copies you pay "the author price": the printing cost for your marketplace times the number of copies. KDP adds, "We can't offer additional discounts" (KDP).

Copies140 pages ($2.68)200 pages ($3.40)300 pages ($4.60)

25$67$85$115
100$268$340$460

Black ink, regular trim, Amazon.com, before shipping and tax.

Shipping is extra, and Amazon publishes no rate card for it. KDP says it is "unable to provide a direct formula" because the total depends on the number of items, shipping speed, destination, marketplace and weight. Proof and author copy orders do not qualify for free or Prime shipping. To see the real number, start an order and stop at the last checkout page before you click Place your order (KDP). We do not estimate shipping on this site for that reason.

None of these is required by Amazon. All of them affect whether a reader who finds your book buys it and finishes it. Ranges for a 50,000-word, 140-page book:

If you use Cover Creator you do not need to buy a barcode: it adds your ISBN to the barcode area on the back cover (KDP). For what each edit does and which to skip, see the guide to self-publishing on a budget.

Three budgets: minimum, careful, full

The same 50,000-word book, priced three ways with this site's calculator. Each figure is the sum of the sourced lines above.

The minimum is real: you can publish a book on KDP for the price of one proof. It is also the version most likely to go out with errors a reader notices on page three. For a marketplace reference point, Reedsy puts the total cost to self-publish at $2,940 to $5,660, based on more than 230,000 quotes from its freelancers (Reedsy). Open the careful budget in the calculator and change any line to match your book.

The other half of the question is what the book earns back. At $7.51 a paperback, the careful budget pays for itself after 262 Amazon sales; the guide to what authors make per book has the per-copy figure for every format.

Where KDP authors overspend

  • Paying a "publishing package" for what KDP does free. Setup, an ISBN for KDP-only print, distribution to Amazon and Expanded Distribution cost nothing. Pay people for editing and design, not for uploading.
  • Ordering hundreds of author copies before you have a plan for them. Every copy is print cost plus shipping with no volume discount from KDP.
  • Pricing at $9.98. One cent under $9.99 drops the paperback rate from 60% to 50%.
  • Adding pages you do not need. Each 100 pages adds $1.20 to every copy you sell or buy. KDP now offers a free font, Amazon Endure, which it says is designed to reduce page count and printing costs (KDP templates).
  • Skipping the proof. At under $5 plus shipping, it is the cheapest way to catch a cover or margin problem before readers do.

If you would rather hand the whole job to a team, Scribe Media, which makes this site, publishes manuscripts for $29,000 (scribemedia.com/pricing). For most authors with a finished manuscript and a modest budget, KDP plus a good editor and cover designer is the sensible place to start.

Common questions

How much does it cost to publish a book on Amazon?

Nothing, if you use Amazon KDP's own tools: setup, a free ISBN for print, the cover and formatting tools and Expanded Distribution are all free. Printing is deducted from each sale. What costs money is everything you choose to pay for: editing, a designed cover, your own ISBN, author copies and shipping. A careful 50,000-word book with a professional copy edit and cover comes to about $1,965 on this site's calculator.

Is it free to publish on Amazon KDP?

Yes. KDP charges no setup fee. For paperbacks and hardcovers it subtracts the printing cost from your royalty on each sale, so you pay nothing upfront and hold no stock. You only pay KDP directly when you order proof or author copies.

How much does it cost to publish a book on Amazon Kindle?

Publishing a Kindle ebook is free and an ISBN is optional. On the 70% royalty option, Amazon deducts a delivery cost of $0.15 per megabyte from each Amazon.com sale, so a 2 MB file costs $0.30 a sale. On the 35% option there is no delivery cost.

Do I need to buy an ISBN to publish on Amazon?

No. KDP gives free ISBNs for paperbacks and hardcovers, and ebooks do not need one. The free ISBN works only on KDP and lists the publisher as "Independently published." Your own ISBN from Bowker costs $125, or $295 for ten.

How much do author copies cost on KDP?

The printing cost times the number of copies, plus shipping and tax. A 140-page black-ink paperback costs $2.68 a copy, so 25 copies are $67 before shipping. KDP says it cannot offer further discounts, and author copy orders do not get free or Prime shipping.
