What a hardcover costs to print
A 6 x 9 inch, 200-page black-and-white hardcover costs $8.05 a copy to print on Amazon KDP and $7.95 on IngramSpark. A dust jacket, which only IngramSpark of the two offers, raises that to $10.70. Lulu's hardcover costs $15.68. Every figure here comes from the company's own rate table or calculator on October 21, 2026, and a hardcover costs roughly one and a half to two and a half times the same paperback.

For the paperback figures next to these, and the setup and revision fees on each service, see the print cost comparison of KDP, IngramSpark and Lulu. In short: the same 200-page book costs $3.40 as a KDP paperback, so the hardcover adds $4.65 a copy there.
Amazon KDP: the formula and the limits
KDP publishes its hardcover price as a formula: "Fixed cost + (page count * per page cost) = printing cost." For Amazon.com in US dollars:
| Ink and pages | Regular trim | Large trim |
|---|---|---|
| Black ink, 75 to 108 pages | $6.80 flat | $7.49 flat |
| Black ink, 110 to 550 pages | $5.65 + $0.012 a page | $5.65 + $0.017 a page |
| Premium color, 75 to 550 pages | $5.65 + $0.065 a page | $5.65 + $0.080 a page |
Source: KDP Hardcover Printing Cost. Regular trim is up to 6.12 inches wide and 9 inches high; larger is a large trim.
Worked out, a regular-trim black-ink hardcover costs $6.80 at 100 pages, $7.45 at 150, $8.05 at 200, $8.65 at 250, $9.25 at 300 (KDP's own example), $10.45 at 400 and $12.25 at the 550-page maximum. A 7 x 10 inch book is a large trim: $9.05 at 200 pages. Premium color is the only color option in the hardcover table and costs $18.65 at 200 pages.
KDP's hardcover help page sets the limits:
- "Hardcover books are printed as case laminate": the cover art is printed on the boards, and "your hardcover book will not have a dust jacket."
- "Dust jackets, cloth bound, and other hardcover formats aren't available."
- "The minimum and maximum page count is 75 - 550 pages," in five trim sizes.
- "Hardcover isn't available for Amazon.co.jp, or Expanded Distribution." A KDP hardcover sells on Amazon and nowhere else.
Setup is free, as for a KDP paperback. For everything else KDP charges or gives away, see what it costs to publish on Amazon KDP.
IngramSpark: case laminate or dust jacket
IngramSpark offers four hardcover bindings in its calculator, and describes them in its own words: "Case Laminate: Color laminated cover glued to boards, no dust jacket"; "Jacketed Case Laminate: Color laminated cover glued to boards, with dust jacket"; and Digital Cloth in blue or gray, "With or without dust jacket, text stamped on spine." For a 6 x 9 black-and-white book on 50 lb white paper:
| Binding | 200 pages | 300 pages | Jacket adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Case laminate | $7.95 | $9.27 | No jacket |
| Jacketed case laminate | $10.70 | $12.17 | $2.75 to $2.90 |
| Digital Cloth (gray) with jacket | $10.70 | $12.17 | $2.75 to $2.90 |
Source: IngramSpark Publisher Compensation Calculator, checked October 21, 2026.
IngramSpark still hosts a printed rate card with the same structure: "COST PER PAGE x NUMBER OF PAGES + COST PER COVER = COST PER BOOK." On it, a 6 x 9 case laminate cost $5.79 a cover and a jacketed one $7.29, with the same $0.0126 a page for both, so the jacket was a cost per cover, not per page. That card is dated March 10, 2020, and IngramSpark changed its print prices on February 1, 2026 (IngramSpark), so use the calculator for current prices. Today the jacket adds $2.75 at 200 pages and $2.90 at 300.
Setup and revisions are free on IngramSpark since that change, and books enabled for distribution pay a 1.875% market access fee. The rest of its fees are in what it costs to publish on IngramSpark.
Lulu
Lulu's calculator lists two hardcovers: Case Wrap and Linen Wrap. Lulu's products page describes linen as "a cotton-poly blend, with a protective acrylic coating that is wrapped around the cover boards," with the text "foil stamped on the spine." Neither the calculator nor the products page listed a dust jacket option when we checked. At $15.68 for 200 pages, Lulu's Case Wrap costs about twice KDP's hardcover. Its case for an author is printing for sales from your own website and its own bookstore, covered in the comparison guide.
List price and royalty
On every service, the print cost comes out of each sale, so it sets a floor under your price and decides what each copy earns.
KDP. The hardcover royalty on Amazon.com is 60% of list price at $9.99 and above (50% at $9.98 and below), minus printing: "(Royalty rate x list price) - printing costs = royalty." The minimum list price is the print cost divided by the royalty rate, so $13.42 for a 200-page hardcover and $15.42 at 300 pages.
| Hardcover, sold on Amazon.com | 200 pages ($8.05) | 300 pages ($9.25) |
|---|---|---|
| $19.99 list | $3.94 | $2.74 |
| $24.99 list | $6.94 | $5.74 |
| $29.99 list | $9.94 | $8.74 |
Our arithmetic: 60% x list price, minus KDP's print cost.
For comparison, the same 200-page book as a $16.99 KDP paperback earns $6.79 a copy. A $24.99 hardcover earns about the same, $6.94, on a price $8 higher.
IngramSpark. You are paid the list price, less the wholesale discount you set, less printing, less the 1.875% fee. At a $24.99 list price and the 55% discount IngramSpark's user guide says "generally allows for the widest availability," its calculator returned:
| $24.99 list, 55% discount | 200 pages | 300 pages |
|---|---|---|
| Case laminate | $2.83 | $1.51 |
| Jacketed case laminate | $0.08 | -$1.39 |
Source: IngramSpark Publisher Compensation Calculator, October 21, 2026.
A jacketed 300-page hardcover at $24.99 loses $1.39 on every copy a store orders at that discount. Two levers fix it, and the calculator showed both: raising the 200-page jacketed book to $29.99 at 55% paid $2.24 a copy, and lowering the discount to 40% on the 300-page book at $24.99 paid $2.35. IngramSpark's 2020 hardcover article notes the discount can go as low as 40%, though a lower discount may mean fewer stores stock the book.
Lulu. For retail distribution, Lulu's help pages say "Your list price must be at least twice the print cost." That puts the 200-page Case Wrap at $31.36 or more and the Linen Wrap at $39.98 or more. For a full table of what every format and channel pays, see how much authors make per book.
Author copies
Copies you buy yourself cost the print price, plus shipping. KDP says the author price "is the lowest price we can offer for your book. We can't offer additional discounts" (KDP). One hundred 200-page hardcovers from KDP cost $805 before shipping and tax, against $340 for the paperback. With a jacket from IngramSpark the same hundred come to $1,070 at the calculator's print price, before shipping and handling, and IngramSpark's discounts on books you order directly start at 100 copies. If you plan to give books away at events or to clients, price that difference before you choose the format. The printing costs guide covers shipping and when an offset run beats print on demand.
When a hardcover makes sense
The numbers above settle most of it. A hardcover edition is worth adding when:
- You can price it high enough. On Amazon, a $24.99 hardcover earns about what a $16.99 paperback does. If the readers you want would not pay that, the hardcover earns less per copy and costs more to give away.
- Your category expects one. IngramSpark's hardcover article (July 15, 2020) says "some nonfiction" is "usually available in hardcover," and that "People are willing to pay more to have the hardcover copy because its perceived value is greater than that of a paperback." Look at the books next to yours on the shelf and online.
- You need it in stores and libraries. A KDP hardcover is not available through Expanded Distribution, so it sells only on Amazon. For anyone else to order it, publish the hardcover through IngramSpark, with your own ISBN (see ISBN costs).
- You want a jacket. Of the three, only IngramSpark listed one. Budget the $2.75 to $2.90 a copy and price for it.
A hardcover does not need to come first. The same IngramSpark article notes that hardcovers are usually released first but you can add one after the paperback. Because setup is free on KDP and IngramSpark, adding a hardcover later means a new cover file and an ISBN for the new format, not a print run.
To build the rest of the budget, open the calculator with a 300-page book and 50 author copies. It prices the paperback with KDP's rates; for hardcover author copies, add $4.65 a copy at 300 pages ($9.25 against $4.60). Scribe Media, which makes this site, sells publishing with "professional editing and design" and "full publishing and distribution" included, from $29,000 (scribemedia.com/pricing). If what you need is a hardcover printed, KDP and IngramSpark cost nothing to set up and are the place to start.
