How much it costs to publish with IngramSpark
Setting up a book on IngramSpark costs nothing in 2026, and neither do revisions. What you pay comes later and per copy: the print cost, a 1.875% market access fee on each distributed sale, the wholesale discount you give stores, and returns if you allow them. Here is each one from IngramSpark's own rate card, user guide and calculator, then a worked example.
What is free
IngramSpark changed its pricing on February 1, 2026. Its announcement says "Revisions are FREE. We removed revision fees for all books effective February 1, 2026," and that title setup stays free (IngramSpark). The 2026 rate card lists all three kinds of setup as free: print and ebook together, print only, and ebook only (IngramSpark rate card).
The user guide adds one more: you can upload as many corrected files as you need at no cost until you approve the eproof, the digital proof IngramSpark makes from your files (User Guide, version 3.3). Wholesale orders from stores cost you nothing up front either; in the rate card's words, "No costs are billed to the publisher for wholesale channel orders." The store's order is paid for out of the sale.
You will still need a credit card on the account. The user guide says every account needs one, because card transactions cover revisions, printing, marketing services and distribution.
The fees that remain
These are the charges on the rate card effective February 1, 2026, in US dollars.
| Fee | Amount | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Market access fee (the rate card calls it the global distribution fee) | 1.875% of the local list price at the time of sale | Each copy sold through IngramSpark's distribution network |
| Order handling fee | Calculated at time of order | Copies you order yourself |
| Shipping | Quoted at time of order | Copies you order yourself |
| Rush service | 30% print surcharge | Only if you choose it on your own order |
| Duplex cover (printing inside the cover) | $0.30 a cover | Only if you choose it |
| Compensation paid by check | $25.00 a check | US payments by check only; direct deposit has no minimum |
| File copies administration | $25.00 a title | Only if you ask Ingram to send your files back |

The market access fee is the one every distributed book pays. On a $16.99 paperback it is about 32 cents a copy. The rate card also reserves the right to change prices once a year, by no more than 5%.
Print cost per copy
IngramSpark publishes its print prices as a formula: cost per page times the number of pages, plus a cost per unit. For a black-and-white book on 50 lb white paper in a trim under 6.15 inches wide, such as 6 x 9, the 2026 rate card lists:
- Paperback: $1.33 a copy plus $0.0146 a page
- Hardcover: $5.31 a copy plus $0.0132 a page
We checked that against IngramSpark's own Publisher Compensation Calculator on October 21, 2026. The inputs were 6.000 x 9.000 in trim, Black & White, White 50, Paperback, Perfect Bound, Matte, Duplex No, 200 pages, market United States. The calculator showed a print cost of $4.25 a copy, which is exactly $1.33 plus 200 x $0.0146. The same formula gives $5.71 at 300 pages, and the hardcover comes to $7.95 at 200 pages.
How does that compare? For the same book, KDP charges $3.40 and Lulu $6.99. We put all three side by side, with the exact settings, in print cost per copy: KDP vs IngramSpark vs Lulu, so we will not repeat the table here.
For copies you buy yourself, IngramSpark discounts the print cost by quantity. The rate card's schedule:
| Copies in one order | Discount on print cost |
|---|---|
| 1 to 99 | 0% |
| 100 to 299 | 2% |
| 300 to 399 | 5% |
| 400 to 499 | 7.5% |
| 500 to 999 | 10% |
| 1,000 to 1,499 | 15% |
| 1,500 to 2,499 | 20% |
| 2,500 to 4,999 | 25% |
| 5,000 to 9,999 | 30% |
| 10,000 or more | 35% |

KDP offers no such discount on author copies, so for an order of a few hundred books IngramSpark's price can close the gap. Handling and shipping are added on top either way.
The wholesale discount
This is the cost most new authors miss, because it never appears as a bill. When you set up a book you choose a list price and a wholesale discount: the share of the list price that stores and wholesalers keep. IngramSpark then pays you "the wholesale price less the cost of printing for each book sold" (User Guide), and the market access fee comes off as well. Payment arrives about 90 days after the end of the month of sale.
The user guide says a discount of 53% to 55%, with the book returnable, "generally allows for the widest availability through most retailers and bookstores." A lower discount pays you more per copy, but stores have less reason to stock the book. The lowest discount allowed is shown on your title setup page and can change.
We ran the 200-page paperback above at a $16.99 list price through the compensation calculator at three discounts:
| Wholesale discount | You are paid per copy |
|---|---|
| 55% | $3.08 |
| 40% | $5.62 |
| 30% | $7.32 |
IngramSpark Publisher Compensation Calculator, October 21, 2026: 6 x 9 in, Black & White, White 50, Perfect Bound, Matte, Duplex No, 200 pages, United States, list $16.99. At $19.99 and 55%, it showed $4.38.
At 55%, the store's share is $9.34 of the $16.99. Your $3.08 is what is left after $4.25 of printing and 32 cents of fees. That is why the per-copy earnings guide shows bookstore sales paying less than Amazon sales for the same book.
Returns and what they cost
Bookstores expect to send back copies they cannot sell. IngramSpark lets you choose whether to allow that, and each choice has a price:
| Returns setting | What you are charged per returned copy |
|---|---|
| No (non-returnable) | Nothing; stores cannot return the book |
| Yes-Destroy | The current wholesale cost of the book; the copy is pulped |
| Yes-Deliver, US address | The wholesale cost plus $3.00 shipping and handling; the copy is sent to you |
| Yes-Deliver, address outside the US | The wholesale cost plus $20.00 shipping and handling |
Source: IngramSpark User Guide, version 3.3, August 24, 2026. Yes-Deliver is offered only for books sold in the US or Canada.
The wholesale cost is the list price minus your discount: $7.65 for our $16.99 book at 55%. A copy that sells and then comes back under Yes-Destroy earned you $3.08 and costs you $7.65, so you are $4.57 down on it. One return cancels the earnings of about two and a half sales. The user guide says books "can be returned at any time and for any reason," that returns "can be very costly," and that authors unsure what to choose should "consider starting with non-returnable." Publishers who allow returns, it notes, usually set aside part of their sales in a reserve to pay for them.
The trade-off is reach. Some stores buy only returnable books, so a non-returnable title may sell fewer copies in shops. If you later switch from returnable to non-returnable, stores keep the right to return copies for 180 days.
ISBNs
IngramSpark does not make you buy an ISBN, but you need one to sell in stores: "You need an ISBN if you want your book to be available for sale in bookstores" (IngramSpark). US self-publishers can take a free one. It lists the publisher as IngramSpark's Indy Pub imprint, can be used only for your title on IngramSpark, and may limit where else you print and distribute the book. Outside the US, free ISBNs are not yet offered.
IngramSpark itself encourages publishers to buy their own. In the US that means Bowker: $125 for one, $295 for ten (Bowker). The user guide says the book industry requires a separate ISBN for each format, so a paperback and a hardcover need two. If you also publish on KDP, your own ISBN is the practical choice, since neither company's free ISBN works on the other. The ISBN guide covers how many to buy.
A worked example
This is an example, not a quote. A 200-page, 6 x 9 black-and-white paperback at $16.99, set at a 55% discount and non-returnable, with one Bowker ISBN, one printed proof and 50 copies for the author's launch event. Prices from the sources above, October 21, 2026.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Title setup | $0 |
| ISBN from Bowker (or $0 with IngramSpark's free US ISBN) | $125.00 |
| One printed proof at print cost | $4.25 plus handling and shipping |
| 50 author copies at $4.25 (no discount under 100) | $212.50 plus handling and shipping |
| Paid before the first sale | $341.75 plus handling and shipping |
| Each copy a store sells | You receive $3.08 |
| Revisions after launch | $0 |
Our arithmetic. A 100-copy order would be 100 x $4.25 less the 2% discount, or $416.50.
The IngramSpark side is small. The real cost of the book is what came before it: editing, cover and interior design. To see the whole budget for this book, open the calculator with a 200-page book and 50 author copies. It uses KDP's print rates, which are a little lower than IngramSpark's for this paperback.
Mistakes that cost money
- Turning on returns without a reserve. At a 55% discount each return costs more than two sales earn. If you allow returns, set money aside.
- Pricing too close to the print cost. The user guide warns that if the list price and discount do not leave enough to cover printing, compensation goes negative and is billed to you. Run your price through the calculator before you approve the title.
- Taking a free ISBN you will outgrow. It cannot follow the book to KDP or another printer.
- Leaving KDP Expanded Distribution on. IngramSpark says an ISBN can be listed on only one account in its distribution, so using both means turning that setting off at KDP.
- Forgetting handling and shipping on your own orders. Both are calculated at checkout, not shown in the print cost.
If you want someone else to handle printing and distribution along with editing and design, Scribe Media, which makes this site, sells that from $29,000, or $4,833 a month for 6 months (scribemedia.com/pricing). If what you need is distribution to stores and libraries, IngramSpark costs nothing to set up and is a sound place to start.
Common questions
How much does it cost to publish a book with IngramSpark?
Nothing to set up. IngramSpark's 2026 rate card lists print book, ebook and combined title setup as free, and revisions have been free since February 1, 2026. You pay as you go: the print cost of any copies you order, a 1.875% market access fee on each distributed sale, and the cost of any returns if you make the book returnable. Your own ISBN is $125 from Bowker unless you take IngramSpark's free US one.
Can you publish on KDP and IngramSpark?
Yes. IngramSpark's help center says you can use both, as long as you do not turn on KDP's Expanded Distribution for that book, because an ISBN can be listed on only one account in Ingram's distribution. Neither company's free ISBN can be used on the other, so authors who use both usually buy their own.
IngramSpark or KDP first?
The order matters less than two choices: your ISBN and KDP's Expanded Distribution setting. If you will use both, buy your own ISBN, set the paperback up on each, and leave Expanded Distribution off at KDP so IngramSpark handles bookstores and libraries. On cost alone, KDP's paperback print price was lower for the 6 x 9 book we priced ($3.40 against $4.25 at 200 pages).
How much does an ISBN cost in the USA?
Bowker, the US ISBN agency, charges $125 for one, $295 for ten and $575 for 100. IngramSpark gives US self-publishers a free ISBN, but it shows IngramSpark's Indy Pub imprint and can be used only for your title on IngramSpark. You need one ISBN per format.
Is publishing a book expensive?
The platform is not: IngramSpark and KDP charge nothing to set up a title. The book is where the money goes. Our calculator's do-it-yourself example for a 50,000-word book comes to about $1,965 and its freelancer example to about $7,970, mostly editing and design. Printing is paid per copy as copies sell or as you order them.
