Book cover design cost

A professional cover usually costs between $350 and $1,200. The low end is the median freelance project in the EFA's 2026 survey; the high end is where the middle half of Reedsy's cover projects tops out. Your price inside that range depends on the designer's experience, the style, and how many formats you need.

The numbers, from two sources

Two public data sets cover freelance book cover pricing, and they measure different things, which is why their numbers differ.

The calculator uses $350 as the budget figure, Reedsy's median as typical ($930, or $740 for memoir) and $1,200 as the high end. Designers who mostly work for traditional publishers can charge more than $1,200; the ranges here describe the freelance market most self-funded authors hire from.

What moves the price

Reedsy names three drivers, and they match what you will see in quotes.

  • The designer's experience. Newer designers quote $300 to $500. Designers with long client lists and publisher work quote at and above the top of the range.
  • Style and complexity. A custom illustration costs more than a type-led design or one built on a licensed stock image, because it takes more skill and time. This is why fantasy covers cost more than business books.
  • The number of formats. An ebook needs only a front cover. A paperback needs a spine and back cover too, and a hardcover needs a case or jacket. Each format adds work, so each one adds cost.

Nonfiction helps you here. Most business, self-help and memoir covers are built from strong type, a photograph or a simple graphic, which is why Reedsy's genre averages for them sit below the overall median.

What a cover fee should include

Two quotes for "a cover" can describe very different jobs. Before you compare them, ask each designer the same questions:

  • How many initial concepts, and how many rounds of revisions?
  • Which files do I get: front cover for the ebook, a full print wrap with spine and back, a hardcover jacket, a square version for an audiobook?
  • Does the price include the back cover copy layout, barcode placement and author photo placement?
  • Who licenses any stock images or fonts, in whose name, and for what uses (print run limits, advertising)?
  • Will the designer resize the spine if the page count changes after proofreading?
  • Do I own the final files, and can I use the art in ads and on my website?

The last two matter more than they look. The spine width depends on the final page count, which can shift during layout, and a book that later becomes a hardcover or an audiobook will need the art again.

Barcodes: if your printer does not add one, Bowker sells a barcode for $25, or $150 bundled with one ISBN (myidentifiers.com). Ask your designer which they need.

What your designer needs from you

A good brief saves revision rounds, and revision rounds are where budgets slip. Have these ready before you book a designer:

  1. The final title and subtitle. Changing them after the design starts often means starting over.
  2. Trim size and an estimated page count for the spine. See the formatting guide for how to estimate pages from words.
  3. The formats you will publish now and may publish later.
  4. Five to ten covers in your category that your reader would pick up, and a sentence on why.
  5. Who the book is for and the one idea the cover should signal.
  6. Back cover copy, author bio and photo, or a date when they will arrive.
  7. Your ISBN for the barcode, if you have one.

Doing it yourself

Free and low-cost cover tools exist, and some printing platforms are adding their own: IngramSpark announced a free cover generator for a group of beta testers in early 2026 (IngramSpark). A template cover can be fine for a book you hand to existing clients, where the reader already knows you.

It is a weaker choice for a book that has to sell to strangers on a store page, where the cover is the first and sometimes the only thing a buyer sees. If you are cutting costs, the editing and layout lines usually have more room than the cover does. The calculator marks the cover "Do not skip" for that reason, and lets you set it to $0 anyway so you can see the difference.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Designing before the title is final. Retitling is the most common reason a cover gets paid for twice.
  • Ordering the print wrap before the page count settles. Agree up front that the designer will adjust the spine once.
  • Choosing by thumbnail alone in your own browser. Look at the cover at the size it appears in search results, next to the books it competes with.
  • Unlicensed images or fonts. Ask for the license terms in writing.
  • Paying for a hardcover jacket you may never print. Buy the formats you will publish now; ask what adding one later costs.

Common questions

How much does a book cover cost?

Most professional covers cost between $350 and $1,200. The EFA's 2026 rate chart puts the median book cover project at $350 (mean $431), and Reedsy reports a median of $930 on its marketplace, with over half of projects between $630 and $1,200.

Does a memoir cover cost less than other covers?

On Reedsy's data, slightly: Biographies and Memoirs averaged $740 and Self-help $810, against $930 for all genres. Heavily illustrated genres such as fantasy cost more.

Is an ebook cover cheaper than a print cover?

Yes. An ebook needs only a front cover, while a print book needs a spine and back cover sized to the page count and trim, so quotes rise with each format you add.

Can I design my own book cover?

You can, and some platforms offer free cover tools. The cover is the part of the book every buyer sees first, so it is the most visible place to save money and the most visible place for a mistake.
